Philippines: The scientists presented the results of medical research on the effects of virgin coconut oil (VCO)


The scientists and doctors at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) was presented to reporters and people medical research results on the effect of VCO on the human body. VCO is an oil extracted from copra or coconut milk through cold pressing method at temperatures not exceeding 470C.


Dr. Christina Binag of Nature Research Center and Applied Science UST said this is the largest medical research on the effects of VCO on cholesterol.

 As authorized by the Philippine Coconut Commission (PCA), 110 study participants needed to consume 03 teaspoons of VCO every day, and 79 others are taking sedatives within 04 months.
According to the study results showed that the amount of triglycerides - fat produced in the liver, and lipoprotein (VLDL) low - bad cholesterol in the body decrease the consumption of VCO. These people also contain high levels of lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol. Low lipoprotein concentrations remain unchanged.
The scientists said the rich content of VLDL and LDL cholesterol can form arrays inside the heart and brain arteries. The artery blockage can cause a heart attack or stroke.
